Brodie Castle

Step into the past – the 16th century, to be precise – with a visit to the stunning Brodie Castle. Packed with ornate antique furniture and ceramics, this grand historical treasure trove gives an insight into the eye-watering opulence enjoyed by Clan Brodie. Run today by the National Trust, the lavish ‘tower house’ has been extensively yet sensitively renovated, retaining the kind of period detail that preserves the building’s unmistakable character. From the majestic arched entrance hall to the draughty drawing room, visitors can flit from one wing of the mansion to the other, taking in an exquisite collection of paintings as they go. The capacious library, meanwhile, contains over 6,000 works. When you’ve tired of the turreted towers and high-ceilinged chambers, there’s plenty to discover outside the castle. Stroll through the landscaped gardens or wander along the woodland nature trail, which boasts observational hides for spotting wildlife. If the weather makes the going soggy to saturated underfoot, duck into the tearoom on the ground floor or pick up a token of your visit at the well-stocked gift shop. For Shakespeare buffs, the castle is situated close to a small hill known as Macbeth’s Hillock: this is where the eponymous hero is alleged to have encountered the Weird Sisters.
